What is North Texas Dieselpunks?

Do you love movies such as Raiders of the Lost Ark,  The Thin Man, The Shadow, Chinatown and The Big Sleep? Do you love Swing Music, Big Band, and Jazz? Is you’re favorite hat a fedora? Do you love Art Deco,  the Golden Age of Radio and vintage cars?

Then you just might be a Dieselpunk.

Dieselpunk can best be defined as a subculture and a genre of art blending the knowledge of the 1920s through the early 1950s with today.  The goal of dieselpunk is to create something unexpected and new by merging the zeitgeist of the past with today’s technology and attitude.

North Texas Dieselpunks is an organization established to bring together like minded individuals who want to socialize and share their love of that Golden Era and keeping it as a living, breathing part of our culture.

June Meeting

At our June meeting we will have a presentation on the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. We’ll explore not only the struggles and hardships of those who lived through it yet also learn how the Dust Bowl, from its origin to its conclusion, may serve as a warning for our future.

The Great Gatsby Report

May 11, 2013 was our double-header and we had a great time. After the Jack and Beverly’s fantastic presentation we went to eat at a great Italian restaurant named ‘Two Guys from Italy’. We then met up at the theater to see the movie. Everyone had a great time socializing and then enjoying the show.

Our May meeting was a great success. Jack and Beverly Wilgus provided a wonderful presentation about the Bauhaus Art Movement. Thanks to their presentation none of us will view the contemporary world the same way again.

Great Gatsby Movie Viewing

As many know Baz Luhrmann (famous for Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge) will release his version of The Great Gatsby to the theaters in May. On May 11th, after our regularly scheduled meeting, the North Texas Dieselpunks are going to have a group viewing of the movie at the Cinemark 17 located at 11819 Webb Chapel Road, Dallas, Texas 75234

This will be an evening showing around 7 or 8 PM. The exact time will be determined when the theater makes them available. Therefore, check back for regular updates.

Join us for viewing what promises to be one of the biggest Dieselpunk movies ever.

May Meeting

For our May meeting, Jack and Beverly Wilgus will provide a presentation about the Bauhaus Art Movement. The Bauhaus was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching, and understanding art’s relationship to society and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and the United States long after it closed.

Come learn about this little known yet highly influential school of art.

April Meeting Report

The April meeting was fantastic! We had a great discussion at the beginning between the attendants and then our speaker, Charlotte Decoster, was very informative. In addition, we had a record attendance.

We would like to extend our appreciation to Charlotte Decoster and the Dallas Holocaust Museum.

April Meeting

The Holocaust will be the topic of our April meeting. Charlotte Decoster, PhD., Education and Public Engagement Coordinator for the Dallas Holocaust Museum Center for Education and Tolerance will provide a discussion of the rise of Hitler, the different phases of the Holocaust, acts of resistance and rescue along with information about the Dallas Holocaust Museum.
